Default Volunteer Firefighter Fitness and Mandatory Standards              Go to Top

Recently, a Harvard study on firefighter fatalities (about 50 percent from cardiac incidents) has stimulated renewed interest in establishing mandatory fitness standards. A department in Norton Shores Michigan is doing just that. Municipalities across the country are beginning to realize that an unfit firefighter, whether paid or volunteer is a liability, to himself, as well as others.

I invite you to visit my website. It's all about what a firefighter needs to do to get, and stay in shape. I offer workshops and training sessions and can even come to your firehouse (with staff and equipment).

There's a lot of work to be done, but it's only you that will benefit in a long run.

Stay Well!

This could be the end of the fire service in Nassau.

An already struggling system, this would hurt it even more if there were fitness standards. Personally I feel that they should have some type of standards to ensure personal health, but we all do have to get a regular physical to make sure we're able to perform the job.

Is there any type of mandate or provision for a volunteer fire department to either provide a service to it's members to promote their health? Be it a weight room in quarters or a gym membership?

I know someone that was a member of a department upsate NY - that departmet had drill once a week on a week night and physical fitness every Saturday morning. You laugh but in the end ... sounds like these guys might have been on the right track.
