Best regards, Rant Boss.
We're discussing Water Rescue, Dive Team Op's etc.
After the recent drowning in Long Beach, several pool related water emergencies and the fact we live on an Island, feel free to discuss your thoughts here about water rescues etc.
Thought # 1 ... People are getting dumber and should avoid water unless they know what to do once in it...and side note, parents who have kids should try WATCHING their little snowflakes when in situations where there could be a potential hazzard.
A lot of water emergencies can prevented. You have to use common scense. You read about people drowning, and someone says, he was such a great swimmer. If he was a great swimmer, then how did he drown ???
Gates should be around pools so nobody can enter, take some swimming lessons, and swim near lifeguards. When the sign says no diving, they mean what they say. No diving. And you should never go swimming alone. You watch them, they watch you.

Nice job on getting the LB water rescue thread closed by showing your true colours. Seeing as how you have almost 5000 posts, which means you have probably read closer to 10X that many on this rant, you somehow still missed the point 223 was making in regards to Newsday's prejudiced reporting of FDs. So instead, you choose once again to lecture all of us from your pulpit and decide to throw shots at 223, who you likely don't know from Adam, and make standard barbs lobbed by paid firemen about unearned ribbons and medals, and signing in for calls you weren't at (I guess just being part of the "TEAM" that safely mitigated the emergency isn't good enough for you).
Although your shots were unfairly fired, and you prevented 223 from responding on the public forum you so obviously cherish because the thread was closed, that wasn't event your worst offense in
the closed thread . . . but rather it was your passing on "Nozzlemouth's" ignorant comments about holding the congratulation on a job well done because the end result was the all to common loss of life that most real water rescues are. Instead of chastising your HFD brother for his insensitive opinion, you choose to jump 223's ass? HFD is having a banner year, and from what can be gathered from this forum, doing a stand-up job, but with all of the nut-hugging going on in "Da Hub" threads, however HFD members feel the need to quell the positive comments from a rescue/recovery thread that involved over 10 agencies interacting to successfully retrieve a victim? You guys are kidding right? Maybe you should let Nozzlemouth borrow your copy of 2008 medal day book, and let him read the Brummer medal recap before either of you question the motivation, or the chest of ribbons, of the "responders" to the alarm last Friday, instead of beating your chests with your keyboards behind closed doors.
Finally, in questioning 223's need for recognition (incorrectly naturally), it begs the question - what recognition are you looking for? Coming onto this rant to cut and paste "Officer's Handbook" and FDNY FF procedure guidelines and trying to pass them off as the musings of 4-5 year city wonder, who are you trying to impress? Or rather, why do you feel the need to "slum" among us witless vollies and dazzle us with your computer intelligence on every subject on these boards while sliding in all the city lingo to get all of the nut-huggers thinking you're hot shit? Whereas I do feel that many of your personal commentaries interspersed within your sermons are thought-provoking, I offer you this humble advice: Seek out the senior man/most respected ff in either of your city or vollie FD, and ask him how many times a day he has to tell his "brother" firefighters that he is the greatest and knows more than you!
Take this answer, and make that the number of times per day you come on this rant and preach to all of us about how we can do it better, or rather, like you do.
Seeing as how the moderators let you get away with crap all over this board, they will likely delete this post and/or shut this thread down, but that would be ill served as this personal reply directed to you on this public forum is truly a request for you to wake up, and share your opinions and knowledge more carefully and fairly.
Before you start flaming away, I only think it is fair to share with you that I prefer not to discuss this on a Faceless forum, however I don't know you and thus can't sit you down on the bumper and talk this out so I think it is only fair that you know the following;
10 years active service in LBFD
5 years active service in the City of Ottawa Fire Department
Avid reader and driller
Strong Supporter of both paid and volunteer Firefighters
Fan of FDNY Tactics, especially in similar (not all) districts - luckily, LB is one of them.
Open invitation to the west end firehouse to continue conversation
Okay, moving right along - first and foremost the thread was closed for a reason that HAS not been disclosed in the open forum. Perhaps being from the Long Beach community you might be aware as to the circumstances, perhaps not.
Second - the purpose of my post was to highlight that there are people among our ranks who look for recognition at the wrong times. Career or volunteer, we're professionals and a professional image should go with that.
Third, unlike yourself I'm not going to list my resume' - but everything else will be explained in a PM that I'm sending to you. However I do know a thing or two about water rescue myself.
PM sent to your inbox. All I can say regarding why the thread was locked is that it was locked by a moderator with MORE info regarding circumstances involving this incident than any of us.
Reviewed your pm, but wondering why you feel the need to announce that to the board??
So, moving along, thanks for additional information regarding the locking of the thread. I still believe your comment was out of line, and should have been deleted. I believe you misconstrued Roof's post and went way overboard. If you want to take on "firefighters in it for the glory, rather than the service" then start another thread, I am sure you will have many takers. In the water rescue thread, it was out of line like many others were.
As for listing my resume as you call it, unlike many on this rant, I don't hide behind the keyboard. Describing myself openly served only to tell you where I am coming from . . . ask anybody in LB, they can point me out!
As for Dive Ops, I don't believe LB is prepared to seriously take on the training regimen and equipment maintenance consistent with a dive team. In my research and experience, I don't think an extended body recovery operation needs to be undertaken by Volunteer FDs. In LB, I don't think Dive ops would often be productive in the Ocean, however the Bay is an altogether different environment. Whereas the Bay is more conducive to a successful operation, can 2 divers respond from home, suit up, be paired up with tenders, delivered to a dive site, and then successfully navigate low visibility waters and locate a victim in such a time frame that revival is a realistic outcome? The location in LB presented as close to an ideal scenario as possible, however I still question if such a feat could have been accomplished much faster than is was, and even if it had, could it have been completed in the survival window? A question we may never be able to answer . . .
Freeport is not a career department. They are hands down the most prepared and have had the most success in this area. It all comes down to dedication and training.
On the other hand let's not count out NYPD air sea rescue. As far as Long Beach they could most likely have had two very well trained divers on scene in less than ten min.
