After last night when Firecom went down, I was wondering, who has a base station, can you tone out any departments around you, how often is it tested, and who is qualified to use it (i.e. Only Officers)?
Woodmere has a base which can tone us out. Many of our members know how to use it, but only a few are "qualified" to act as dispatchers. People can get confused once they start having to answer phones, talk on the radio, get map info, get other stuff done etc... We took over last night for Firecom as soon as we heard 650 on the air letting us know that Firecom was down. Good job B.M.F. on the radio in 650!
540 was the backup for Bayville last night. 911 calls for our district were routed to 540 during the outage as well.
We still have our base station in place though Firecom became our primary when I became Chief in 96. We are capable of toning out and those that have been trained are capable of manning the base.
Our base station is in the police station manned 24/7.They can tone us and a couple of mutual aid companies out. Also have a base in our station. Can talk to the whole county but can not tone anybody. This is used when we get a storm and the county frequencies are busy.We just go to our own frequency and talk to our own vehicles.
hewletts can dispatch the 3rd and 400 plus with the system any department that tones out on 46.10 all you need is the codes and with 2 main and 1 back up 3 can work at once the only problem would be the phones we only have 3 emergency lines
440 has the ability to tone out the whole 4th Battalion. The only Departments we cannot handle dispatch operations for currently would be Lynbrook/E. Rockaway since they went high band, but we are working on adding the UHF capability very soon.
