Since the introduction of our deptartments minitor V's, a few members have been having a slight problem. Some members more than others have been picking up the first tones of Carle Place and it sets off our pagers. The higher ups have not found an answer to the question. Why does this happen??? If there are any Carle Place members on here, does the same happen to you, I mean do our tones set off your pagers???

Valley Stream sets off my Minitor IV. I haven't figured out which company yet. It only happens occassionally. I think it's a fairly common problem with the newer digital pagers.

This has happened many times in the past. Many departments share one similar tone or one that is very close, close enough to set off the other ones pagers. East Meadow's EMS tone, one long monotone tone, used to activate Long Beach pagers. I don't know who your "higher ups" have contacted but Paul Grimm from All Service Alarms is VERY good at tracking these things down. He has found common tones with Nassau and Sullivan Counties and since we both share 46.10, a common tone could set off a radio in another county with the right conditions. I am sure any good radio technician could help out in this situation but Paul is one of the best. His company works for many fire departments on the island doing repairs.

Ive never had a problem with my pager being set off by other departments. The only time it is set off by another department is when westbury's dispatcher tones us out for a mutual aide to them. In fact this is a first, ive never heard that our tones set off other depts. Be interesting to know why. . .

Interesting, we used to have a problem with the II's where E.meadow EMS tones set off our Chief's tones. But since I was issued the IV i haven't had that problem anymore. The tones are too close to eachother and sometimes the pager makes the mistake.

Wow, someone that looks like they are from Lynbrook and doesn't know what in instalert is. I hope your joshin. Must be a younger member. And I'm not saying that's a bad thing at all. It's just that Instalerts and JMD and even the name Plectron, even Viking, are names that are just fading off into the sunset. They used to be very common names around the fire service. Everybody was issued a Plectron or an Instalert way before the idea of personal pagers even existed. JMD's were sold by an Ex-Chief from West Hempstead.
Sorry, I'm rambling doing a history lesson. I was about to explain what made an Instalert different. I said enough for now.

Tiller, thats a middle of the road model you have pictured. There were the original tube jobs that were red, then after the model you showed, there were multi channel Plectrons, and of course the famous cassette recorder Plectrons, that were also tone activated and recorded calls you might have missed while you were out. I forgot another way of alerting, the old phone group alerts. Has nothing to do with radios but many fire departments had phones as the primary alerting. Levittown, Bellmore, Franklin Square, North Massapequa, just a few examples. I'm sure there's a bunch of people on here that never heard of that and don't know how it worked.

Why funny man, you don't think that it just possible that a newer member of the fire service has not heard of Instalerts? Excuuuuuuuse me for reminiscing.

Careful, the Instalert "siren" might be cause for this post to be moved to a different section, one better suited for our audibles/air horn enthusiats.
