My iphone already is picking up the wi-fi from optimum, but it is extremely slow and makes you log in each time. The 3-g network is much faster, looking forward to a wi-fi long island.
Doubtful it will be (at least in the next few years) up to the specs of what we would need from a reliability/availability standpoint.
We've had really good success with the Sprint data cards, as has a few other departments. At least for the near future, the data cards are going to be the best way to get data to our devices.

Apparently there are "wifi" boxes being installed County-Wide on telephone poles. I.e. where these are installed, Wifi would be readily available.
If so, I think its a great idea. FD's are incorporating laptops into many FD units now, and it offers endless possibilities.
Yes. If you are an Optimum customer, you get the Wi-Fi system free. To access it, you must enter your optimum id and password. The question is, if a dept. subscribes to Optimum, can they sign on with all of their laptops at one time??
i heard that all of nassau was planned to be covered under a wifi that is seperate from optimum and that can be accessed for free. Im not sure if it turned into optimum wifi or if the original plan is still in place for the future
Remember Cablevision is now Newsrag..... I dumped them for Verizon
i think cablevision's services are better than verizon fios. verizon has a reputation for nickel and dime'ing their customers i feel.
this new wifi is a great feature that they rolled out, and the best part is that i can access it from my house (even tho its slower than my optimum online in the house, but whatever).
We are going to be starting a pilot program in 2009, trying to figure out the best use of technology in the trucks that balances features, cost and usability. Our first step will be using WIFI solely based in the firehouse to feed the truck relevant information.
