I thought this would make for interesting reading. Wantagh-Levittown VAC got called out to a burn victim facial, leg and arm burns from a fire pit that exploded. Wantagh Levittown re-alerted for their second ambulance and requested mutual aid from Wantagh FD. My inside sources tell me it was shock absorbers that were thrown in that caused this. Call was on 9/7 at approx 2030 hours on Water Lane South.

Reason: ranter request
Total of 3 burn vicitms at scene. WLVAC had 2 buses, 14a, Wantagh Rescue 6918 and Engine 694 were at scene as well. WLVAC transported 2 and Wantagh transported 1. And yes Tellm's inside sources, (who ever they may be) were correct it was shock absorbers that were in the fire pit that caused the explosion. They were a few other things besides your basic wood in the fire pit as well. Def not a smart move on there behalf.
Amazing. Just wow. They teach not to stand in front or behind a car in FSA within the first hour of Essentials. Besides it being common sense.
i think you got it confused...a fire pit is an outside fireplace.....were you thinking of fire pistons? (the things that heat up and explode which causes the bumper to fly off the car)

Pretty much the same thing. Maybe my mechanical knowledge would tell me not to put something that's filled with oil and compressed air into a fire pit for various reasons. Same effect with the fire pistons. Where do you think they got the idea for the crash pistons in the bumpers?
A strut from the home owners truck was thrown into the fire pit "accidentally". He recently put a lift kit on his personal vehicle, and "did not know" his old struts were in the box that was thrown into the pit.

FWIW.
ok then but what about the door knobs that were in there?
A few years back up in t Port Wash / Sands Point, some younger folks were having a bon fire on the beach when one of them decided to toss an empty (never empty) propane cylinder into the fire...you can all figure out the rest.
Here's one where a keg party took a turn for the worse......
Associated Press

NEW MILFORD, Conn. - Investigators were trying to determine who tossed a beer keg into a burning barrel at a party, causing a deadly explosion that sent metal shards slicing through a crowd of people.
The explosion early Sunday killed Sean M. Caselli, 22, of New Milford. Seven other people were taken to hospitals with burns and shrapnel wounds, police said. Caselli was struck in the neck by a piece of flying metal.
Sgt. Lee Grabner said investigators interviewed witnesses Sunday to try to identify the person witnesses say threw a quarter-keg of beer into the flames, and to determine whether criminal charges should be filed.
Fires had been set in several barrels to keep people at the partygoers warm at the outdoors party in western Connecticut, said Police Captain Michael Mrazik.
"This is a certain tragedy," said Police Chief Colin McCormack. "However, nothing I have been apprised of to this point in this investigation, which I caution is at the very early states, indicates a deliberate act on anyone's part."
